T. rex Lived Closer to Us Than to Stegosaurus
This dinosaur timeline fact is solid, but it works because the names hide huge spans of time. Tyrannosaurus rex lived around 68–66 million years ago, while Stegosaurus lived far earlier in the Late Jurassic, roughly 152–145 million years ago, so the gap between them exceeds the time from T. rex to today.

The fact
“The time between Tyrannosaurus rex and the present day (about 66 million years) is actually shorter than the gap between T. rex and the Stegosaurus, which went extinct roughly 150 million years ago. When T. rex roamed North America, the Stegosaurus had already been extinct for around 83 million years—longer than the time that separates us from the last dinosaur.”
This one is delightfully true. The Smithsonian’s page on the Nation’s T. rex says Tyrannosaurus rex lived around 68–66 million years ago. The Natural History Museum’s Stegosaurus entry places Stegosaurus in the Late Jurassic, about 152–145 million years ago. Even using the closest ends of those ranges, Stegosaurus vanished tens of millions of years before the first T. rex appeared. That means the gap between Stegosaurus and T. rex is larger than the gap between T. rex and us.
The arithmetic is what makes the fact feel uncanny. If T. rex lived as late as 66 million years ago, then the present day is about 66 million years removed from it. But if Stegosaurus lived as late as 145 million years ago, then even the shortest possible gap from Stegosaurus to the earliest T. rex is about 77 million years. Use older points in the ranges and the separation grows larger. The meme version often says roughly 80 million years between them, and that is a fair simplification.
Part of the surprise comes from how people use the word “dinosaur.” We talk as though all famous dinosaurs belonged to one giant simultaneous cast. But “dinosaur” is not one moment in time. It covers a vast portion of the Mesozoic Era, which the Natural History Museum’s Cretaceous overview places across many tens of millions of years just within the Cretaceous alone. T. rex and Stegosaurus are both dinosaurs in the same way that a human and a Devonian fish are both vertebrates: true, but not very time-specific.
Stegosaurus belonged to a world that was already ancient by T. rex standards. The NHM Stegosaurus page places it firmly in the Late Jurassic. T. rex, by contrast, shows up near the very end of the Late Cretaceous on the Smithsonian page. Between those points lie enormous changes in geography, climate, flora, and fauna. Continents shifted, seaways opened and closed, and entire ecosystems turned over. T. rex did not roam a land of stegosaurs any more than we roam a land of mammoths by default.
The fact also exposes how bad humans are at intuiting deep time. Once numbers get into the millions, our brains tend to flatten them. Sixty-six million years feels basically the same as one hundred fifty million years in casual speech: both just mean “ridiculously long ago.” But in geology and paleontology, those differences are colossal. The interval between the end of the Jurassic and the end of the Cretaceous was long enough for whole dinosaur lineages to rise, diversify, and disappear.
That does not mean T. rex and Stegosaurus are the most widely separated dinosaurs imaginable. Far older dinosaurs existed long before Stegosaurus, and many bird lineages continue the dinosaur story into the present. But the comparison works because both names are iconic. Stegosaurus is one of the classic Jurassic plant-eaters; T. rex is the blockbuster Late Cretaceous predator. Put them next to each other in a museum gift shop and they seem like neighbors. Put them on a timeline and they become strangers separated by almost incomprehensible ages.
There is one caveat to the meme: the exact number depends on which points in each species’ time range you use. The Smithsonian entry gives T. rex a 68–66 million-year window, while NHM’s Stegosaurus page gives 152–145 million years. So “83 million years apart” is not a universal exact figure. It is one estimate drawn from common rounded dates. The robust takeaway is the inequality, not one frozen number: Stegosaurus is farther back from T. rex than T. rex is from modern humans.
This comparison can also make extinction feel more concrete. The NHM Cretaceous page notes that the Cretaceous ended 66 million years ago, the date associated with the mass extinction that removed non-avian dinosaurs. T. rex lived right up against that boundary. So from our standpoint, T. rex is not just closer to us than to Stegosaurus—it is also one of the last famous non-bird dinosaurs before the curtain fell.
So the claim holds up beautifully. Using the Smithsonian timeline for T. rex, the Natural History Museum’s Stegosaurus range, and NHM’s overview of the Cretaceous, the gap between Stegosaurus and T. rex exceeds the time between T. rex and today. Dinosaurs were not one giant prehistoric moment. They were a dynasty of worlds.
